Herman believes our elderly are the foundation of our society and that our youth are the pillars that rest upon their foundation. Disregarding our youth and elderly leads to the destruction of our community. Individuals with special needs and anyone who has been and currently is a victim of domestic violence are very important to Herman. Herman understands that domestic violence does not just stay in the home, but kids and the community are affected as well.

One thing that negatively impacts the community is a cycle of criminal activity. Herman believes recidivism stems from a lack of community resources or the knowledge that community resources exists. Herman believes by establishing drug treatment courts and mental health courts, juvenile recidivism and adult recidivism can be reduced. It starts with the individual, but our community should provide resources as well. Doing so, makes our community safer.

Hearing from the community is vital as a prosecutor. Herman will designate two ambassadors from each county to serve as points of contact for the community. These individuals will be able to contact Herman quickly to inform him on what is happening in the community and what is needed to tackle any issues that are happening in the community. Communication with law enforcement is paramount. That’s why Herman will welcome Sheriffs from each county along with Chiefs of Police from each municipality in our district into his office at any time. This will ensure that the District Attorney’s Office is working effectively with law enforcement to move cases quickly to eliminate jail overpopulation. Jail overpopulation takes resources out of our community and puts it in other communities when those resources could be better served making our community safer.

Herman believes in second chances when appropriate. The power of resilience is important to Herman. Herman believes that a person’s past does not define their future. It takes courage, integrity and honesty within, to make this happen. The Be Resilient Initiative (BRI) will be led by the District Attorney’s Office. Herman will form a council of leaders from this initiative. This council will consist of individuals who were once incarcerated or addicted to any substance, probation/parole officers, law enforcement officers, retired and current schoolteachers, local clergy and local defense attorneys and employment, housing and mental health services located in this district. Herman would also like for high school students who are in the School Government Association from all three public high schools to participate in this initiative as well.
